ORCHESTRATION BASICS and ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
A substantial amount of the book is dedicated to the basics of orchestration including chord
spacing, chordal treatments, how to approach doublings, voice leading, tonal balancing etc.
There are also chapters on more advanced orchestration concepts such as how to use specific
instruments for melody and accompaniment, how to balance the melodic instrument with the
accompaniment instruments, orchestrating as part of the composition, the three elements of
orchestral compositions and how to work with them, and much more.
There are chapters describing how to configure your DAW/notation software as well as your
samplers. Template design like Trava is discussed in detail as is the process of transferring MIDI files to
and from notation and DAW programs to produce the best results possible.
